Paul Gardner (aka 'Wookiee')

UKTP contributing writer, Paul Gardner's resumé in his own words: -

Sara and Paul Gardner Paul Gardner and the REME Golf Team Paul Gardner with Eleah

Name: Paul Gardner

Nickname: Wookiee (I got this through playing rugby! And no I am not hairy like Chewbacca!)

Age: 40

Born: Out Rawcliffe (just down the road from Gt Ecclestone!)

Interests: All motor sports, golf and most other sports

Occupation: HM Forces (Army).

Op Tours: I have completed Operational tours in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Kosovo, Macedonia and Iraq.

Army life: I joined the Army in 1996 as a Vehicle Mechanic and specialised in working in heavy Armoured vehicles, including Chieftain, Challenger 2, CRARRV, Warrior, 430 series, CVR(T), plus many other vehicles from motorbikes to Tank transporters.

Tractor Pulling: I was first introduced to tractor pulling in 1979 (I have a picture of me sat on the original snoopy) and have been hooked ever since. My dad (Dave Gardner) became one of the founding members of the NWTPC and served as chairman for a number of years in the late 80’s and early 90’s.

I became a member of the BTPA track staff from the age of about 10 or 11 helping out events all over the country running the weigh bridge or being a grader or roller driver (whatever needed doing even though I wasn’t legally allowed to drive a tractor at that time!) I then moved onto becoming the first flag man on track for a few years before commitments in the Army prevented me getting involved as much as I would like.

I worked (before the Army) for Brian Armistead ('Desperate Dan') for a number of years as a steel fabricator and helped out with the tractor from time to time but didn’t have the time to spend helping out like some of the guys on the team did such as Karl Carter, Stan, Mick Hollins, etc so was not a full time team member!

Living Abroad: Due to the fact I have spent 7 years living in Germany I have attended a number of pulls both in Germany and Holland, my local pull for those 7 years was the Green monster teams event in Fuchtorf. This enabled me to keep up with the goings on throughout Europe.

Family: Married to Sara (11 years) and have 2 daughters Emiliana 5 and Eleah 2. Both my daughters love tractor pulling and went to their first event before they were 1 year old!

Location: We are currently living in Colerne Wiltshire and I work in Bristol as a subject matter expert on Tanks dealing with civilian industry on behalf of the MOD. I have a HnD in mechanical engineering and have professional accreditation with MIRTE, SOE and IEng.

Aspirations: When I settle down in one location (wherever that may be) for more than 24 months I plan to get involved with running and administering Tractor pulling to help improve and grow the sport in the UK. I also have a plan to build and run my own tractor puller but as I move every couple of years I can’t commit to the project currently, but it will happen at some point (I hope)!
